Acerola: The West Indian Cherry
Acerola, also known as the West Indian cherry or Barbados cherry, is a small cherry-like fruit that grows on the Malpighia emarginata tree in the Caribbean and parts of Central and northern South America. The plant is also cultivated in the rest of South America, Florida, Hawaii, and some places in Southeast Asia. Acerola has a sweet-sour taste and is particularly known for its very high vitamin C content, one of the highest among natural sources. In addition to vitamin C, acerola also contains vitamin A, B vitamins, minerals such as iron, calcium, and phosphorus, antioxidants, and bioflavonoids.
Acerola Powder and Extract
Since acerola cherries are highly perishable and must be consumed quickly after being picked, the fruit is rarely eaten fresh. Culinary-wise, it can be processed into desserts, sauces, and jams, and in some countries, acerola juice is popular. Acerola extracts and powders are mainly used in dietary supplements due to their high vitamin C content.
